Cancer!!!

August 11th, 2008

There are several types of cancer, all arising from the uncontrollable multiplication of cells in an organ or tissue. The affected cells have been damaged so that they no longer function properly yet they divide more rapidly than the normal cells around them. The body’s immune system cannot differentiate between the cancerous cells and normal cells and so does not destroy them.

Symptoms vary according to the part of the body affected. In the breast or testes, lumps may appear; elsewhere the cancer may not be apparent until the function of the affected organ begins to deteriorate. There may be pain of varying intensity; severe in some cases. Loss of appetite and severe weight loss and visible signs of serious illness (cachexia).

A cancer starts off when the genetic material inside a cell is damaged by a carcinogenic substance. It may take several years before the cancer is large enough to be noticed. There are various risk factors associated with cancer, including smoking and drinking alcohol, contact with certain plastics or pollutants that mimic oestrogens. Exposure to asbestos X-rays and ultraviolet radiation are also responsible for certain cancers. The presence of toxic substances produced by fungi (aflatoxins) in food and certain diseases such as hepatitis C can trigger cancer too.

Eye Infections!!!

July 11th, 2008

Infectious conditions of the eye include conjunctivitis, inflammation of the tear sac (dacryocystitis), inflammation of the uvea or middle layer covering the eyeball (uveitis), infection of the eyelids (blepharitis) and styes. Retinal infection (retinitis) can also occur in people with a compromised immune system.

If any of these infections do not respond to anti-inflammatory treatment or if itching or pain persists for more than 24 hours, consult your doctor as soon as possible. If suffering vision loss, go straight to a hospital accident and emergency department. Although the causes of eye inflammation may be environmental (wind, cold, dust), they can lead to, or be caused by, a viral or bacterial infection. An inflamed eye can also be due to seborrhoeic dermatitis (see Scalp problems) that usually affects the scalp and eyebrows.

Massage Therapy!!!

June 30th, 2008

Therapeutic massage has evolved from one of the most important and instinctive human needs - to touch and be touched. Paintings in Egyptian tombs show people being massaged. The emperor Julius Caesar was accustomed to have a daily massage for his neuralgia, and the physicians of ancient Greece and Rome valued the power of touch as a method of relieving pain. Massage also plays a part in sophisticated Eastern healing systems, including those of China, Tibet, Japan, Indonesia and India.

In the West, massage is increasingly used therapeutically and in clinical settings by professionally trained masseurs and health care workers such as nurses. It is also routinely used within the NHS in intensive care units for people with cancer, heart disease and AIDS, for children and premature babies, for elderly people, and in ordinary health care centres, pain clinics and drug dependency clinics. Nine out of ten hospices in Britain also offer some form of physical therapy, including shiatsu, reflexology and massage. Doctors usually regard massage as a complementary therapy in addition to medical treatment, rather than as a separate therapy in its own right.

Herbal Medicine!!!

June 21st, 2008

Herbal medicine is the use of plant extracts to treat disease and promote well being. The earliest from of medicine known to mankind, herbal medicine is still used by over 80% of the world’s population, and until 50 years ago, some two-thirds of all medicinal drugs were based on herbs. Now-a-days, the active therapeutic ingredients of many plants have been identified, and pharmaceutical companies have synthesized copies and patented new drugs to be used in orthodox medicine.

Herbalists will prescribe herbal medicines and herbal dietary health supplements to help boost the efficiency of a body system rather than to combat a particular symptom or illness. There are herbal preparations to promote the health of the immune, nervous, circulatory, digestive, skeletal, muscular and hormonal systems, as well as the skin and hair and other body parts.

A growing problem of Asthma!!!

June 7th, 2008

An estimated 150 million people worldwide suffer from asthma, and every year asthma and other respiratory diseases are becoming more common globally. There are many theories about why the number of asthma cases is rising, but none is free of controversy.

The tendency to develop allergic conditions, such as hay fever, allergic asthma and eczema often runs in families. If one or both parents suffer from asthma, hay fever or eczema, the chance of their children developing one of these conditions is higher. Scientists are searching for a genetic link in the hope of developing gene therapy to treat the condition.

Asthma can be severe and is responsible for hundreds of deaths a year. A medical consultation will be needed to distinguish between bronchial asthma, a smoker’s cough, a chest infection and other breathing difficulties, such as the simple viral bronchitis that often follows a common cold.
